With only a few days left in the year, 2017 is almost officially in our rearview mirror. And while it’s important to take time to reflect on our accomplishments – like our best year yet for the Recycled Rides program – it is equally important to make a plan for the future. That’s why, as we look down the road ahead, those of us at Caliber would like to kick start your year with a few New Year’s resolutions for the road.

With each passing year, we see more and more drivers hitting the road. There are more than 264 million vehicles on the road in the U.S., and with the adoption of driverless cars just around the corner, we guess we’ll hit 300 million in less than 10 years. And, as much as Caliber loves cars, one thing of which we have to be aware, is that 75% of carbon monoxide pollution in the U.S. is caused by motor vehicles. So, for 2018, our first resolution is to drive less. Carpool with a friend, or, if it’s close, walk to your destination – let’s just do whatever we can to keep our emissions low, and our ozone flying high.

The other side to having more drivers on the road, is you have more tempers on the road as well. 33% of all accidents are typically linked to behaviors associated with road rage, such as illegal maneuvering or misjudging another driver’s intent. Don’t get us wrong: We get it. We’ve all been there. Someone cuts you off and you just want to scream to high heaven, but, this year, try to give people the benefit of the doubt. So, time for our second resolution: keep your cool on the road. If you find yourself squeezing the steering wheel, take a few deep breaths, and steer toward a calming demeanor.

“Omg brb g2g.” That’s all you ever need to say. Before getting behind the wheel, let people know you won’t be texting while driving. The National Safety Council reports that cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year. There’s just no excuse for that. Especially when companies like Apple have developed a “Do Not Disturb” feature that allows your iPhone to sense when you might be driving and prevents notifications. So, resolution three: Do not text and drive. It can wait.

We want to get 2018 started off on the right foot. So, if you can’t travel by foot this New Year’s, please call a cab. January 1 is the worst day of the year for intoxicated driving, and alcohol-associated accidents. We want you to have a happy new year, but, more than anything, we want you to have a safe one. So, for our last resolution: When in doubt, call a cab out.

There you have it: our 2018 New Year’s resolutions for the road. We plan on sticking to them, and we hope you will, too. You never know what the new year will bring, but we hope, through all its twists and turns, you see a smooth ride. And if you happen to hit a rough patch – or a rough patch hits you – you know you can always count on us to restore the rhythm of your life.

Happy New Year from your friends at Caliber Collision.
