Summer may be blazing, but that won’t keep football season from coming hot out of the gate during the preseason. When it comes to road tripping to support your team, it’s better to have a playbook for the season before the first kickoff. As excited as we are to set up the tailgate tent and gas up the grill, our experts at Caliber first want to give our fans a few pointers on how to start winning before the whistle blows.
Plan to Win
Most teams have posted their schedule by now, so you can bust out the calendar and get a game plan going. Saturdays in the fall are sure to be rowdy, so you’ll want to know exactly where you’re setting up shop. Keep in mind hotels fill up quickly for the big games, so the sooner you book, the better. Restaurants and bars are sure to be packed as well, and a little research on reservations in the off season will make sure your plans don’t fumble.
Home games are a given, but sometimes you’ll have to make the trek to enemy territory to show support from the other side of the stadium. Gather up your fellow die-hards and recruit a vehicle that suits your travel team and will make it all the way to the end zone. You can even go the whole nine yards and put together a playlist that brings back those college game day memories to fuel that school spirit along the ride.
We’ve put in the work to win at the road trip, but where exactly will you stay? Some are lucky enough to huddle up with close friends or family who have a home near the stadium, but for most of us, that’s not the case. If you plan early enough, you might be able to score a hotel near the field for a decent rate, and we’re also fans of rental services such as AirBnB or Vrbo to come in clutch if you wait until game time to book a room.
Finally, it’s time to kick off the tailgate. Know where you’re going to set up shop beforehand so your crew has ample time to get pumped. And what’s a tailgate without entertainment? Be sure to bring a portable generator to power the real MVPs of the party—a TV and quality speakers—that’ll get friends and fans hyped. While you watch the pregame show, fire up the grill and ice down with a stocked cooler to keep the good times going.
Pregame preparation is the key to a successful season both on and off the field. However, despite our best efforts to follow the playbook, we know things don’t always go as planned.
